Little stuff

A few things to chew on while I do tshmom's interview questions.

First, for Zombieslayer, it turns out fully automatic weapons do come in handy during a zombie invasion. Also we saw 28 Weeks Later last nite and it's really pretty intense. Not exactly a "zombie" movie I guess, since it involves a virus not the undead, but still pretty good.

Second, for Rudy Giuliani, if you ever do take Ron Paul up on his offer to debate foreign policy, it might help if you read this first. Facts are fun!

And lastly, regarding this article. I'm fine with the silly little photoshoped picture of Ron Paul and Micheal Moore. I don't really care if someone wants to call Ron Paul nutty. I don't expect much more from left/right political "thinkers", but this quote really got me upset:

Strict constructionism and original intent are fine things, but shoving every problem and every issue through the Founder’s Intent meat-grinder is lunacy. Besides, this rigid orthodoxy brings him down on what both Andrew and I consider to be the wrong side of the gay marriage question.

Heck yeah, if the NeoCons want to kill a few thousand innocent Iraqi's and Iranians we, as good Christians, can live with that. Just so long as they say some nice things about gay marriage being bad.

When did Christians sell their souls to the Federal government in exchange for the privilege of ruling over a minority of gays? It makes me rather ill. We sure as heck can't support a guy who doesn't think the federal government shouldn't be the enforcer of God's Will. No, what we need is a man who will kill us some Muslims and hate us some gays. That's the kind of leader we need. That's conservatism.

Anything else is just nutty.

If his position is so different from the republicans, why is he running as one?

It's a good question Sam, and one I'm sure he'll be asked time and time again between now and the time they stop letting him talk. He thinks he is a Republican, and if a Republican is what most Republican claims they are suppose to be, then he is. However, what most Republicans claim to believe and what they actually legislate are two VERY different things.

He is, in fact, a libertarian. In fact he ran as one for president already. I suppose he figures that would be a waste of energy (at his age especially) and would rather run as a Republican since he's at least guaranteed TV time that way. In that sense it's a pretty smart move, and even a good move for the Libertarian party as his ideas will be talked about more and more people will realize that the Republicans are nothing but big government shills, similar to the Democrats.

So to answer your question, I don't know. I hardly know what a Republican believes now-a-days. Do you consider yourself one, Sam? If so, what are the principles you think they stand for?

I don't consider myself a Republican or Democrat. I lean towards conservative, but with Libertarian influence. I don't believe in legislating every single thought word and deed. A perfect example of my frustration with politics in general is the whole Don Imus thing. I want to make it clear that I don't agree with what he said. Calling a team of talented college basketball players "nappy headed hoes" is despicable. However, the public outcry, and political leaders posturing around calling for his firing is just as bad if not worse than what he said. The first amendment guarantees free speech, even speech that is not in line with what popular culture believes is "right." I see a time coming (probably sooner rather than later) when Christians will not be able to evangelize because it is not "right." (meaning in line with what popular opinion is at the time).

This is a long, rambling answer to your simple question, but hey, I am the rambler. :)

I guess the simple answer is "No, I am not a Republican."

I was at Emily's baseball game yesterday afternoon. It was the ninth inning, they were losing 9-6.

I saw Emily get a hit with 2 outs, to keep the inning going. Then she scored the winning run. They won 10-9.

How cool is that !!!

My slam on automatic weapons was a long-term thing. Sure, for the immediate moment, they're fine. But over a long period of time, like if the zombie plague is expected to last for years, you're going to have to conserve bullets.

Now, if you're mopping up, of course, automatic weapons are plenty adequate, and I assume a lot of fun. I've never shot one, so I couldn't tell you. I've always wanted to though.

Oh, wanted to add that according to Max Brooks, who wrote The Zombie Survival Guide, zombies are indeed caused by a virus. If you get a chance, pick up that book. Might save your life some day.

Yeah, I wasn't really picking on you, just thought it was a cool game and was looking for a way to get the plug in. I've heard good things about Brooks' stuff, especially the World War Z one.

Dad, it was cool. We were glad you guys could make it to the game. We checked the schedule and she's playing untill June 30th. If you guys want to come again you're welcome to.

I can't totally buy into your point of view on the Muslims. Parts of our policy are misguided -- as Paul points out, we should take a good hard look at cause and effect -- but I support a democratic middle east, regardless of the ideology of its elected leaders. I don't like war, but I really hate the idea of religious and suicidal zealots with a finger on any kind of trigger.

Yeah, what's up with Ron Paul? People love him, but there's practically a media blackout on the guy.

Scott said...

Scott,

I understand what you're saying, but to what end? Democracy in these countries seems to produce victories for extremists like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, or any other number of people we don't like. So we go in and remove them, which just makes the people madder and they elect more extremists because of it.

SME, I have no idea. Actually I do, the don't talk about him because they don't perceive him as a realistic candidate. It's kind of a self fulfilling prophecy type thing though because they don't talk about him, people don't learn his view points, and they don't support him. If people don't pay for his campaign the media is not going to cover him for free.

The thing that is different about Paul though is that he doesn't require media attention to get his views out. Since unlike most presidential candidates, he actually has something to say. The problem is people don't like to read.

But lucky for them there's this!
