It's been a long time since a new song has gone up so this post is dimply to point out that there is one now. It's a few years old and I've liked it for some time, but I thought I'd share it with you all now.
Not much for discussion here so I'll ponder this:
What do you think of luck? Can a person be inherently lucky or unlucky, and how would you define such a thing?

I sometimes think that luck is like a form of ESP. Which would mean that people could be 'born lucky' or equally born unlucky...
But sometimes I think that 'luck' is a state of mind or attitude. If you believe you're lucky.. then you could be. I've know people who believe that bad things always happen to them... because their behaviour encourages bad things to happen to them - they are constantly making the wrong choices. Maybe 'luck' is just another word for heightened awareness?
I have a question that your question sparked.
I like to say that when something "good" happens to me, I am blessed. If something bad happens, would that be "cursed?"
kind of along the lines maybe sort of in an odd way of teh bad luck/good luck thing...
Oh, btw actually, I like the song. unique sound.
Oh, and another thing, have you ever beaten Minesweeper set on expert? I usually get bored after carefully planning for a while and then start randomly clicking.
The way I see it is there are random occurrences in the world. They can fall on our heads for better or worse. A bunch of good things happening to the same person doesn't make them lucky, it just means the randomness went in their favor a little longer. I'll call it luck, but I don't think it happened because the person was inherently lucky. That's just how randomness is.
I think there is some truth to what you're saying about the state of mind though, kitten. Like if a person is constantly going around expecting the worst, it's probably going to happen to them more. I wouldn't attribute it to any unluckiness or anything abstract like that. I just think if your thinking negative you're lowering your expectations or striving less, which is going to effect your overall life.
Sam, I think a lot of what I hear other people call blessings, aren't. When I see a person who works 55 hours a week thinking his nice car and nice house are a blessing I have to wonder. To me, a blessing is something you do nothing to receive. We make a lot of our own blessings, I think.
Same goes for the good/bad thing. I mean if you get a promotion at work is that a blessing? What about the guy who got passed over for it, was he cursed? Most of the time, when something good happens for us you can find a way it's going to effect another person negatively. What does that say?
I'm glad you like the song.
I've beaten expert mode on Minesweeper countless times. I really do love the game. I haven't played it in quite some time though. I think my best time was something like 350 seconds on expert. I was pretty proud of it to, I made a screen capture of my results. lol@me
I just wanted to say I like your song.
As for the luck stuff I agree with what you said Scott.
The American Heritage Dictionary defines “luck” as follows:
“1. The chance happening of fortunate or adverse events. 2. Good fortune or prosperity; success....to gain success or something desirable by chance: lucked out in finding that rare book.”
Ec. 9:11-12 KJV
"I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them."
I think that "luck" has a lot to do with the old cause and effect deal. I think circumstances play a big part in what happens to us good or bad. I know that sometimes God causes things to happen. Also there are times(and probably a lot more of these)when God allows things to happen rather than causes them.
Cool song. Reminds me of David Byrne.
CK and Scott, I'd have to agree with your assessments of luck. I don't so much believe in luck except in the good karma/golden rule sense of it. Meaning: If you try to be a good person and treat others well, you are going to have a better chance of having good luck come your way. But even if you don't, it's still the right thing to do.
I don't beleive a person is "inherently" lucky. But, I do believe in common sense, circumstances, and most importantly God's will.
As to God "Allowing" things to happen . . .
Crystal- I take it you're not a staunch Calvinist. Me neither, only because I struggle with thoughts on God's intervention/ control of mankind, etc. It's opens up HUGE cans of worms which I don't even want to touch most of them time. Call it a "finite" mind.
I do, however, sometimes think that I am dangerously close to wondering where the omnipotence is at all. So I routinely find myself giving up on trying to comprehend the difference between "allowing" and "causing." I don't think it's for me to worry about. I do, however, lean towards God Causing all things and not "allowing."
Just some thoughts.
sarah said: So I routinely find myself giving up on trying to comprehend the difference between "allowing" and "causing."
Just think of it as the difference between killing and not preventing someone from dying 'naturally'. The first is caused, the second is allowed...
As this isn't a debate about God's Will I'll keep my fingers safely away from the keyboard [grin].
Ya Sarah you are right that I am not a Calvinist (big believer in free will for sure). =oD Good thoughts to chew on though Sarah. And I agree common sense, circumstances, and God's will play a big part in "luck" or chance if you will. I would also add that if we have good attitudes (or thankful hearts) that we can all see ourselves as "lucky" or blessed. We like to call it attitude gratitude around here.

CK ~ You crack me up!! =oD
I'm just about as far away from a Calvanist as possible.

Erm... Thanks! I think......
It wasn't an insult. =o)
I am not far from a Calvinist. In fact, if forced to classify, I would classify myself as one. Why all the classifications though? eh?
P.S. I am not artsy fartsy nor do I hate moisture
Crystal- new post coming soon. I need some ideas on what to write about, I feel like I need to live up to Scott's blog. haha
*thinking*
Good comments by the way...
It's fun to see CY and dback here. Hi guys!
It is nice to have them both here. It think I annoy them a bit on their blogs, but the come here so I guess no hard feelings.
Sarah, what's going on with that job thingie?
Hi Sadie....
You don't annoy me scott... At least not yet [grin]. We have different ideas about things that's all. We even kind of agree on some things too... but from different reasoning...
Hopefully we will find out by the 10th when everyone who has to approve everything comes back from vacation and our criminal backgound checks come back. Everything looks promising for now but we will see.
You mean if your criminal background check comes back clean.
If.
Hello Sadie.
I enjoy our discussions Scott. You're intelligent and not purposely confrontational. We disagree a bit but then again, we agree a bit too.
I think you and I may sometimes come across as more belligerant than we actually are. Sometimes I'm just trying to open up a discussion and get people to react viscerally. Other times, I'm looking for the well-reasoned arguments. You oblige with both. Hope you keep joining in the discussions.
Crystal is hilarious. I think she reminds us all that we all take ourselves a little too seriously. Good for her.
Way too predictable Scott, Way too predictable.
haha I keep telling Jack that there is something I'm not telling him that he will find out once they get our criminal background check . . .haha
