I'm going to need to get a new computer. The one we have now, which I built about four years ago is starting to drive me nuts. I started looking at Dell and Gateway's websites and it's clear to me that I can still build my own system for much cheaper than what those companies offer, and get a much higher powered system. However, as we all know, much has changed in the world of computers over the past 4 years. When I built this one I spent a lot of time reading and trying to figure out which components were best for me. I pretty much have to start over a read about all those components again because everything is very different. What's amazing is how much everything has dropped in price. I bought a 100 GB hard drive then for $180 bucks and now I can get a 250 GB hard drive for 85 bucks. Yeah. And where I got my 512MB RAM back then for about $150 bucks, now I can get a whopping 2GB RAM for about $120. And the 1.8Ghz processor that I have now was 180 as well and now I can get a 3.0 Pentium D for the same price. I remember when I was shopping for parts for this computer the highest they made the chips was 2.4 ghz, and that was for about 600 bucks!
Ah, computer talk, you know I love it.
Anyway I've decided my next post will be in the form of answers. Answers to what? Well your comments of course. Comment to this post with any question you have and I will answer it in my next post. Can be a question about anything like, "What's your favorite color?", or "How can you call yourself a Christian when your clearly a greedy Libertarian?!?!!?!" Or my personal favorite, "HOW DO YOU SLEEP AT NIGHT?"

Hey DBack, while since you're an expert on the topic, do you have a recomendation as to a good source for cases? I really hate buying cases.

About the question thing, ask as many as you like. Don't feel like you have to narrow it down to just one or two.

The general things I tend to look for are a decent size power supply and a large case ... or at least one with easy access to everything inside. With all the components we have in newer PC's, a 500W power supply is not crazy. And as a tech, I like the large cases because of the headaches over the years that I've had by having to take out your power supply or hard drives just to reach the memory slots. Older HP's and Compaq's both do that. Grrrr!

Yeah, I was thinking about 500W. The only problem is that at that power everything seems to be made for 14 year old gamers. Neon lights, side windows, etc.

I stated in this post that I wanted to build a computer. Macs are nice and shiny and all that jazz, but computers they are not.
I stand by my lol macs.
I must say that tigerdirect.com has always given me the components I need at the greatest overall prices. Once or twice a year they have a case sale, where you can get a case w/ a 400w power supply and all the space you need for free (mail in rebate style). I just built a very nice computer for a friend of mine for about $300. Bought components from tigerdirect, newegg, and xpccomponents.com. Stay away from Ebay, there's a lot of gray market crud on it. I know, I got burned w/ a couple of memory cards for my camera. Anywho, have fun, and let us know what you end up building.
Oh yeah, and why do people always say, "can I ask you a question?" My response is, "You just did, now go away."

I am so sorry I didn't respond earlier either. To be very honest I wasn't sure if this was a real comment because my friends have a brother who posts stuff just like what you wrote all the time on blogs as anonymous. That was stupid on my part.
I did think what you wrote was so incredibly heart felt and sad. And I wanted to call you, if I knew who you were, and talk with you and hug you!!
I am no expert in anything like this but I can relate and I am a great listener and I can pray for you or with you.
