Taking before pictures probably would ave given this a bit more of a dramatic effect, but since I didn't just imagine a lot of really tall weeds where the mulch is now.
And if anyone can help me and identify this ground covering I will offer them a very special ePrize.

Yes, mulch is great! looks good, and so much nicer than weeds.
looks very nice! You can landscape my yard anytime you want.
Scott you're just amazing! Love you!!!
Cool. My guess is cedar shavings.
Well yeah, the mulch is cedar, but I was more wondering if any of you were amateur horticulturists and could help me figure out what the plant is in the last picture. I'd really like to get some more of it.
Sam, I'd be happy to help if you were a tad closer. I'm pretty busy with this yard though. This is one of 6 of our gardens. We go though about 50 yard waste bags a year between trimming bushes, pulling weeds, and raking leaves for 3 40+ foot maple trees. Plus when we moved into this house 3 years a go it looked like nothing was maintained for about a decade or so. Good times, good times.
I'll send the picture to my mom. She might know. It sort of looks like Rose of Sharon, but I'm no expert.
Looks nice.
I take that back... Rose of Sharon is a shrub. I must be thinking of something else. What do I know ;)
Well you know more than me since I've never even heard of Rose of Sharon.
The green parts look like creeping phlox, but the flowers are different. Maybe there's two different ground covers growing up together?
Good luck with the mulch. I have yet to find one that the weeds don't grow through. :( My parents blacktopped their driveway, and the weeds even grew through the blacktop within 2 weeks!
WoW!! I remember what it looked like before, way to go!!! It's beautiful! Mark says you can come do ours now. Just Kidding, we have actually made some progress this week but we still have a ways to go!
I had creeping phlox once. I took a few aspirins and felt better the next day. Hoo-hoo. I kill me.
I'll e-mail our landscape design guy with a picture. He's the best I've seen at identifying plants.
BTW, your yard looks very nice.
I know what it looked like before and I agree with the rest of the world, it does look good!
I know for sure it's not phlox, we have that in the front of our house. This ground covering is really neat that we have. In the spring it starts off a beautiful yellow then it turns this light green without flowers, then it gets pink flowers that turn green, and then I think it eventually is a darker green. I just LOVE it! It has more of a pine look to it than phlox does and grows taller. It actually looks little like ever greens with flowers.
I just remembered, there's a great nursery out in Glen Ellyn (I think) called Platt Hill - if you took some clippings there, they could probably tell you what it is. They've helped my folks identify strange plants before.
Hmm, we have a Platt Hill by us in Carpentersville, that's a good idea.
Thanks Don & Dback.
Steph, we have quite a bit left to go as well, as you probably know.
thshmom, I don't mind a few weeds, it's the whole forest of weeds that bothers me. If I have to spend a coupla minutes every weekend pulling weeds out of the mulch I'll consider it a success.
Killing weeds feels good very deep in your soul.
Nearly as empowering as killing ants...
It looks great! I just removed most of the grass from my front yard and planted flowers. I will add it to my blog when I have some time.
Love Missy
Mom said it could be one of many varieties of seedum, but it's hard to tell without knowing its size.
Dan, finally something we can agree on.
Mis, thanks and I'll look for that.
Laura, I'll be heading to the nursery in the morning to see if they can help.
Agreeing is always good, it's not all black and white.
Well he nursery was no help. We did, however, pick up some nice perennials so that was good.
